4 Steps To Take During A Dental Emergency
Dental emergencies are relatively common, but that doesn’t make them any less distressing. If you have a problem such as a broken, knocked out (avulsed), or painful tooth, it is important to know what to do to preserve your oral health.
1. Call Our Office Immediately
For severe tooth pain, we will do our best to schedule a same-day appointment and assess your pain level over the phone. We often accommodate patients after hours.
2. Preserve the Affected Tooth
If a large piece of the tooth has broken off, store it in lightly salted water or milk to preserve it until you get to the office. If the entire tooth was avulsed, rinse it with clean water and then fit it back in the socket if possible. Otherwise, tuck the tooth into your cheek. In either case, do not handle the tooth by the roots. Only touch it by the crown. If the patient is a child, put the tooth in milk or slightly salted water to prevent choking.
3. Manage Your Pain
Whatever the nature of your dental emergency, it is likely that you will experience some pain. Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and topical solutions can be used to treat the pain. Another option is to apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas to the outside of your mouth, over the painful area.
4. Seek Immediate Treatment
Many dental emergencies need immediate treatment to save the affected tooth. This means that when you have a dental emergency, your first priority is to call your dentist.
For instance, if your tooth has been knocked loose or has come out entirely, getting in to see your dentist in under an hour gives them a much better chance of saving the tooth. If you’re dealing with a toothache, the problem may be an infection. In this case, a procedure such as root canal therapy may be needed to remove the infection and save the tooth.
